Day 3 - The Lighting Assistant

I had a very interesting and creative day today. One of our friends, Jenni, is a very good photographer and she invited me along to a shoot. We went into London to photograph beautiful things for a client - cushions, lampshades etc. All in the African Romantic style. I must say, it is very hard work and all I did was help with the lighting. But I did quite well even if I say so myself. (Jenni, this is the bit where you leave a comment just to say exactly HOW good I was ;-)) If more days turn out like this, I'll have to consider moving that priorities list around AGAIN!

Day 2

It's only Day 2 and already I can see that I won't be able to be a kept women for too long. Yes, I do have a long-ish To Do-list (which I should hopefully start attacking soon), but I can see that boredom will get the better of me. Vacuuming is probably the most boring of all the jobs that are now my sole responsibility. Finding a new job, suddenly jumped from the number 5 spot on my list to the number 1! Now who would have ever thought that... I'm sure it will be totally different when the first little Cowle arrives, but that is not for some time yet.

Following on from my previous blog post, I saw this today:

South Africa expropriates a white farmer amid calls to speed up land reforms.

Quoting the last bit:
'But Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka says the pace of reform should be speeded up - as in neighbouring Zimbabwe, where most white-owned land has been seized by the state. "There needs to be a bit of oomph. That's why we may need the skills of Zimbabwe to help us," she said.'

SKILLS OF ZIMBABWE TO HELP US !?!?! Skills!?! Like thousands of percent inflation. Like DOUBLING petrol prices every few months. Like a valueless currency and a dead economy. Widespread hunger. Political unrest. Removal of free press.

Yes, I can definitely see any forward-thinking government wanting to learn from Zimbabwe!

South African sentiment

Everyone who knows me would know that I'm not one to slate South Africa. I love South Africa. I will always do so. However, every now & then you come across something in the press (or new-style internet "press") that just hits home -- whether you like it or not.

And so I stumbled upon this yesterday: GPSA Article of 19 May 2005

By no means do I agree with everything he says, but it's sad to know that his opinion is a strong and growing one.

I sincerely hope most of what he speculates will happen, will in fact not. Only time will tell.

Saddened by St Peter's

We were both overwhelmed and saddened by St Peter's Cathedral in Rome. Overwhelmed by the impressive space and detail and saddenend by the fact that after we've been inside for half an hour, we were yet to see any sign of Jesus. Every pope imaginable is visible in some form, but we had to look really hard to find any sign of Him.

Passionate Italy

Yes, it hasn't changed at all since my last visit. Everything is still passionate: the people, the food, the landscapes. I just LOVE it! And now Leon's fallen in love with it too. It is definitely on our list for another trip - soon...

Estate in Italia!!

(That's "Summer in Italy" for the rest of us!).

Yes, the time has come. We're off on Saturday for our long awaited 9 day Italian break. Elizma's been 3 times (she keeps reminding me), but I've yet to have the pleasure.

We're staying in Amalfi in the South of the country. Looking to spend a relaxing time around the area, with not too many touristy things planned (apart from the last 2 days when we'll be in Rome).

A few must-do's there are, of course. Like Pompei and Capri.

And, of course, we'll post some photos after the trip.
